Today Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami got arrested in Mumbai in the investigation of a 2-year-old suicide case which again opened recently, as stated by the Mumbai Police.
Many Union Ministers are amidst those who have rebuked the arrest as an intervention on press rights, Prakash Javadekar, Information and Broadcasting Minister calling it a note of the Emergency. He also tweeted about it talking about press freedom in Maharashtra.
Arnab Goswami alleged he was assaulted and manhandled by the police at his Mumbai residence before being forced into their police van.
Arnab Goswami, Republic Editor-in-Chief has been detained for ostensibly abetting the suicide of Anvay Naik, 53-year-old interior designer and his mother, two years ago.
Previously the designer had named Arnab Goswami in a suicide note and had accused Republic TV of not giving him his dues.
Anil Deshmukh, Maharashtra Home Minister said in May, was holding a reinvestigated post of a new charge by Anvay Naik’s daughter. Her daughter said that the Alibaug police had not investigated Arnab Goswami’s role in the non-payment of dues, which, she alleged, drove her father and grandmother to suicide two years ago.
The Raigad police had discovered a suicide not drafted in English in which Anvay declared he and his mother chose to take the farthest step on account of payments due to them not being realised by the proprietors of three organisations – Arnab Goswami of Republic TV, Niteish Sarda of Smartworks and Feroz Shaikh of IcastX/Skimedia.
The three firms have Rs 83 lakh, Rs 55 Lakh and Rs 4 Crore respectively and during the investigation, they found out that he was indeed in heavy debt and had been struggling to repay contractors.
Republic Tv is already dragged in the TRP scam along with 5 other channels involved in making huge checks for boosting TRP. But so far the Republic has denied any of the accusations.
