Arnab Goswami Case: 14 Days’ Jail Says Court

Arnab Goswami Arrested in Mumbai for Suicide Abetment Case

Arnab Goswami was arrested on Wednesday morning from his residence in Mumbai on a 2-year-old suicide case of an architect/interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother. The Republic TV promoter was sent to 14 days of judicial custody by the court in Maharashtra yesterday.

The court in Alibaug rejected as well as dismissed police’s demand for 14-day custody and the Arnab Goswami’s charge where it stated that he was assaulted when he was being arrested and many other allegations.

There is a 13-minute video shot while he was getting arrested which shows police pleading the Editor of Republic Tv to cooperate after giving me warnings he was then eventually dragged by the policemen to the van.

On Thursday, Bombay High Court will hear Mr Arnab Goswami’s petition to the case filed against him, and he also expects to get bailed. He was taken to jail last night after a lengthy hearing which took about 6 hours and finished at midnight.

Mr Naik and his family are going to file a petition in the Bombay High Court for the intervention, and Mr Goswami’s lawyers called the denial of police custody a success. They also state that this thing has a broader agenda as in an exercise against a free, independent journalist as well as news network. This is to bring focus on unproven accusations in a sealed case based on which Arnab Goswami was arrested and assaulted.

On Thursday, the entire union cabinet came out and stood in support of Mr. Arnab Goswami testifying that his detention was a notice of the Crisis and that it was an attack on press independence. Both the News Broadcasters Association and Editors Guild of India came out upon the arrest, but the Mumbai based Television Journalists Association said that the case was a personal matter and not related to journalism.
