By the time the corona outbreak showed its treacherous phase, medical experts worldwide started preparing a robust vaccine for it. More than a dozen medical institutes and companies in India have been developing the COVID-19 vaccine for two or more months.

It seems like an India-based medicine manufacturing firm Bharat Biotech International Limited has succeeded in producing effective vaccination.

ICMR (the Indian Council of Medical Research) has been making constant efforts to produce ‘Covaxin’ in association with Bharat Biotech International Limited.

On this, ICMR wrote a letter to the firm stating- “The vaccine is derived from a strain of SARS-CoV-2 isolated by ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune. ICMR and BBIL are jointly working for the pre-clinical as well as clinical development of this vaccine,”

Further, ICMR said that the vaccine had been planned to be launched on August 15 for public use. On the same day, India will be celebrating its 74th independence day.

The letter says- “Non-compliance will be viewed very seriously. Therefore, you are advised to treat this project on the highest priority and meet the given timelines without any lapse,”

A member of Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, Amulya Nidhi shared her views on the letter released by ICMR and said- “How can ICMR say that the vaccine will be launched for public use by August 15? How can the clinical trial be completed in just one month for a vaccine,”

‘Jan Swasthya Abhiyan’ is a network of organizations dedicated to working in the interest of public health.

ICMR has refused to give any comment on the letter released. On this, the Head of Clinical Trial in SRM Hospital and Research Center, Tamil Nadu, Satyajit Mohapatra, shared his views with NDTV and said- “ICMR has given a timeframe for completion of Phase 1 of the trial by August. Phase 2 of the study will start after completion of Phase 1, followed by Phase 3.”

At the moment, no commercially approved vaccine has been launched to cure COVID-19.
