Canadian actor Elliot Page has announced that he will be getting a divorce from wife Emma Portner after three years of marriage. Page, who came out as trangender in December 2020, shared in a joint statement with Portner that they will be getting divorced following their separation last year. “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,'' they wrote. Despite this, they also mentioned that they still remain close friends and have the ‘utmost respect’ for each other.
Elliot Page, the 33 year old Oscar-nominated star of Juno, Inception and The Umbrella Academy, and Emma Portner, 26, who is a choreographer and dance teacher, tied the knot in January 2018, after a brief relationship. While the former couple kept their relationship a secret for the most bit before marriage, they began dating in 2017.
Elliot Page, earlier known as Ellen Page, came out as transgender in December 2020. The actor made her coming out public when she took to social media. At the time, his decision was widely praised by his fellow actors as well as fans and supporters. In his statement, he talked about feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude for all the support he has had. He could not “begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self”. He used the opportunity and platform also to address the issue of discrimination faced by nonbinary people. Soon after Page’s statement, wife Emma shared a screenshot of the post on her page, supporting Elliot and writing about how proud she is of him, with an outpour of love.
