Because of the Covid-19 conditions and the increased fear of the new strain, the possibility of conducting the Tokyu Olympics in 2021 seems to be an uncertain affair. The former Chief-executive of the London Olympics in the year 2012 said that the organization of the game over the summer is very ‘unlikely’. Tokyo is currently facing one of the harshest brunts of the COVID infection. A state of emergency has been announced because of the accelerating numbers of COVID cases each day. Under this scenario, the authorities and experts feel that the mention of the Olympics will be quite uncertain.
Entrepreneur Sir Keith Mills express his opinion that the organizers should have a discussion and come to a conclusion to ‘cancel’ the games for this year. The Olympics have already been postponed by almost a year and Japan is in no form to host the games anytime soon. The COVID conditions make it very challenging for any nation to conduct the games under these unprecedented circumstances. The Olympic games have been initially rescheduled to be conducted from 23 July to 8 August and the Paralympics from 24 August to 5 September. But after the initial postponement, the concept of having the games under deteriorating health conditions seems like a very ‘unsure’ event.
Contrary to the popular belief, the Prime minister of Japan announced that the Olympics and Paralympics will take place as scheduled. A recent survey conducted among the Japanese population revealed that almost 80% of the national crowd is not keen on having the Olympics in the rescheduled time. The official cost of the games has also increased by 22% to 11.5 billion pounds and the added security measures and safety precautions will bring the numbers up to 2.1 billion pounds.
However, Sir Keith feels that the country might wait till the last moment to see any miraculous changes. Just in case the vaccines roll out faster, the scenario will be much better, and talking about the games can be a possibility then. Otherwise, he feels that the magnificent setup and arrangements seem very ‘unlikely’.
